Waterlox® was founded by R.L. Hawkins, Sr. in 1910 in Cleveland, Ohio. He purchased a small paint-making business called the Empire Varnish Company. Using tung oil, he developed specialized formulations for interior and exterior finishes. These included varnishes, stains, enamels, and paints. Each product was designed to enhance and protect the natural beauty of wood.
